Social-Emotional Learning Continues at Home
Teachers and families are most effective when children hear similar messages in both places.
Families do not need special programs or expensive materials to teach social and emotional skills. Some of the strongest learning happens during regular everyday moments.

Early Childhood
Families can:
Name emotions:
“You are disappointed because your tower fell.”
Practice turn-taking:
Use board games, puzzles, cooking, or playtime to practice waiting and sharing.
Use stories:
Ask children how characters feel and why.
Create a calm space:
Provide a comfortable area where children can breathe, look at books, hold a stuffed animal, or take a break.

Middle Childhood
Families can:
Ask problem-solving questions:
“What are your choices?”
“What might happen with each choice?”
Talk about feelings without judgment:
Let children know that difficult emotions are okay even when certain behaviors are not.
Give appropriate responsibilities:
Chores and household responsibilities can build confidence, independence, and responsibility.
Model apologies and repair:
Adults can say, “I was frustrated and raised my voice. I should have handled that differently.”
This teaches children that mistakes can be repaired.

Adolescence
Families can:
Listen before fixing the problem:
Sometimes adolescents want to be heard before they want advice.
Respect growing independence:
Offer meaningful choices while maintaining reasonable expectations and boundaries.
Talk openly about stress:
Normalize asking for help and discussing emotional challenges.
Model healthy coping:
Adolescents notice how adults respond to frustration, disagreements, and stress.
Try This at Home: The Three-Question Check-In
At dinner, in the car, or before bed, choose three simple questions:
What was one good part of your day?
What was one difficult part?
What is something you need tomorrow?
There are no perfect answers. The goal is simply to create a regular opportunity for connection.
